Towards improved performance of waterborne polymer dispersions through creation of dense ionic interparticle network within their films

To overcome the main challenge of low performance waterborne polymer coatings due to particulate nature dispersions and complex film formation process, in this work we implemented strategy ionic complexation between oppositely charged particles. For that aim, doubled monomers ithaconic acid (IA) styrenic 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO) were used densely functionalize (meth)acrylic forming particles, synthesized by seeded semi-batch emulsion polymerization produce high solids content anionically cationically dispersions, respectively. The advantage double charges selected is they provide charge density onto particles at lower monomers. blending these oppositely, concentrated resulted instantaneous coagulation. postpone immediate complexation, water-soluble non-ionic polymeric stabilizing species as steric obstacles around colloids employed, which allowed prepare colloidally stable blends complexed films. Certainly, established complexes carboxylic acids IA anionic monomer quaternary ammonium groups DABCO units within films improved substantially mechanical properties water sensitivity with respect individual reference blend, bonding was prevented pH control. Moreover, dense network formed actuated a strong barrier leakage all during immersion water. Beside simple towards coatings, results offer further extension their application potential.
